A plastic injection molder don't need making mold

Years ago I worked at an injection mold making shop and we needed some new assembly tables, we could have ordered the steel and welded the tables but, the owner decided to job it out. "Don't try to beat a man at his own game" he said. If you're plastic injection molder, (in my opinion) don't try to be a builder. The technology involved in new injection mold build changes so rapidly that if it is not your main focus you will not be competitive, it can't be handled effectively as a distraction or after-thought. On the other hand, if you're an injection molder, you certainly need an adequately equipped tool room (adequate being basic equipment and skilled work force) to handle maintenance and minor repairs. This offers your customers the security of knowing that 99% of the time they won't even have to think about how their tool is doing. The exceptions (major repairs) can be handled by shops equipped with the latest and greatest technology.

That was especially true in years past. Injection mold making was such an art that you had to rely on the knowledge of highly skilled plastic injection mold makers. Like with many things that were once arts, there is now a more scientific alternative. Science can be taught much easier and more quickly than art.

The way that mold making has evolved over the last ten years is pretty amazing. Some plastic injection mold makers have harnessed technology that allows them to build plastic injection molds for close to the same or less than what it would cost to ship a injection mold from overseas. While the goal they had originally was to regain work that had been lost to overseas competition, these companies have come to understand that by lowering the price just enough to keep a backlog, they can enjoy very nice profits (nothing wrong with that). This is not common knowledge even among domestic competitors that have returned to working 55 hours a week with the old mold making philosophy and lower cost equipment. The problem is that injection molders will not enjoy the benefits in most cases unless they investigate the technology on their own. My guess is that 25% of injection mold makers have it figured out and are enjoying the benefits. Razor thin margins are not something these companies are dealing with. I have seen US companies build plastic injection molds in house, that the buyers think are being built overseas, because they can. If you think about it, it's a very smart plan that keeps the plastic injection molders and other mold makers in the dark about the possibilities. It is very difficult to articulate in a short comment how much an injection molder could benefit from an in house state of the art tool room and in most cases those who understand will not have a motive to share the reasons.
